About Us And Our Plants

About Our Plants and Packaging

We supply young but established plants; we do not sell plugs. To give an idea, they are approximately the size of the smallest size plant you would buy in a garden centre. Each plant will be sent to you as a bare-root specimen. "Bare root" means that the plant will have the pot removed and the soil washed off its roots before sending. The plant will be wrapped in damp paper, bagged, labelled, packed in a box for protection, and delivered to your door. This reduces costs compared to sending the plants in pots, but it is also the best way to send plants with delicate aquatic foliage.

All the plants we sell are propagated directly by us from our own stocks here at the nursery in Essex. We do not buy in plants and sell them on, because it cannot be guaranteed that these will be true to name. (In recent years, with the advent of large numbers of foreign-grown plants, this has become a big problem in the aquatic industry). All our plants are thus British-grown specimens, so they are already adapted to our outdoor climate when you receive them.

We do not use any chemical pesticides or sprays on our plants. Large pests, such as snails and caterpillars, are hand picked, and small pests, such as aphids, are rinsed off with water.

The outer boxes we use, all pieces of tissue, newspaper, and card, and all sticky tape that orders are packaged in are all biodegradable. Any bags the plants are wrapped in are carrier bag plastic and can be recycled as such. All plastic pots are food grade and should be easily recyclable – check local facilities. The sticky address labels, the polystyrene chips around live snails, and any bubble wrap or jiffy bags are unfortunately not recyclable or biodegradable and should be placed in the general rubbish bin. All our bubble wrap and jiffy bags are sourced second hand to help reduce waste.

The nursery here is completely free from the invasive non-native species Crassula helmsii (New Zealand Pigmyweed/Australian Swamp-Stonecrop), Myriophyllum aquaticum (Parrot's Feather), Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (Floating Pennywort), Floating Water Primroses (Ludwigia spp.), and Water Fern (Azolla spp.).

About Us

In 1995 Wayside Aquatics was formed as a tropical fish shop and water garden nursery. It is located in a quiet semi-rural area known as Hook End, situated about 15 minutes from the centre of Brentwood in Essex. In 2009 Wayside Aquatics began selling their pond plants online, and in 2013 this became a separate business as Water Garden Plants. In 2016, the decision was made to close Wayside Aquatics and focus solely on Water Garden Plants, pond plants by mail order.

Water Garden Plants is run by Anna and James. Anna has worked professionally in the aquatic industry for 25 years. She has authored or contributed to several books, written numerous magazine articles, and has consulted for international aquatic companies. She has a BSc and is also RHS qualified. James has collected and grown aquatic plants for over 30 years. He is particularly keen on waterlilies, breeding and developing many new varieties for future introduction.

The nursery is registered with the RHS Plant Finder as a specialist nursery.
