Sometimes known as Nymphaea pygmaea 'Alba', this is a waterlily which originates from still waters in northern Europe through to Asia and America. It is by far the smallest white waterlily, and therefore ideally suited to the smaller pond or tub garden. It produces numerous small, simple, elegant, pure white flowers over an exceptionally long bloom period. The leaves are mid green, often with burgundy overtones, and have a softer, more delicate look than the leaves of the typical garden waterlilies. Together with the simple flowers, they give the plant a real 'wildflower' feel. This species deserves to be more widely known but is rarely available, as it can only be grown from seed. Plants offered for sale under this name are often not actually N. tetragona, but are common white garden waterlily varieties instead, as these are much easier to obtain and propagate.
