Sometimes known as Nymphaea pygmaea 'Alba', this is a waterlily species which originates from still waters in northern Europe through to Asia and America. It is by far the smallest white waterlily, and therefore ideally suited to the smaller pond or tub garden. It will produce masses of small, simple, elegant, pure white flowers over an exceptionally long bloom period, and will never take over the pond. The leaves are mid green, often with burgundy overtones, and have a softer, more delicate look than the leaves of the typical garden waterlilies. Together with the simple flowers, they give the plant a real 'wildflower' feel. This species deserves to be more widely known but is rarely available, as it can only be grown from seed. Plants offered for sale under this name are often not actually N. tetragona, but are common white garden waterlily varieties instead, which look quite different.

We recommend starting your Nymphaea tetragona off in a pot of 1 litre capacity. Read more on how to pot and care for your plant here.
