This is a rare subspecies of the native lesser spearwort, found in remote lowland parts of the British Isles in damp grassland and waterlogged soils. Ideal for small ponds, it has fleshier, firmer, and more compact foliage than the standard lesser spearwort, yet with flowers that are the same size (around 1½ cm across). These properties make it much more ornamental and thus more suitable for the garden pond. The leaves are thick and glossy with a lanceolate shape and in spring are often attractively flecked with purple, turning green as the first blooms come. Yellow buttercup flowers are produced from late spring right through to late autumn, making it a constant source of colour. Trimming the plant occasionally will keep the maximum number of new flowers coming and help to keep the foliage compact.
Please note that R. flammula, like all buttercups, is toxic and should not be eaten by humans or pets.
