This waterlily species originates from still waters in northern Europe through to Asia and America. It is by far the smallest white waterlily, and therefore ideally suited to the smaller pond or tub garden. It produces many small, simple, elegant, pure white flowers over an exceptionally long bloom period. The leaves are mid green, often with burgundy overtones, and have a softer, more delicate look than the leaves of the typical garden waterlilies. Together with the smaller, simple flowers, they give the plant a real 'wildflower' feel. This species deserves to be more widely known but is very rarely available, as it can only be grown from seed (we grow our own from our own seed). Plants offered for sale under this name are rarely N. tetragona, but are garden waterlily varieties instead, which actually look quite different.
Stock is always limited, as these take a long while to raise from seed to flowering size.
A note on taxonomy: Some botanists consider this plant's true name to be Nymphaea pygmaea. The RHS considers Nymphaea pygmaea and Nymphaea tetragona to be synonyms, with Nymphaea tetragona being the correct name, so we have followed their rule here.
