Butomus umbellatus 'Rosenrot' is a selected form of the British native flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus), chosen for its richer colouring. Like the wild type, it has very slender leaves and produces tall umbels of flowers in summer, but its stems are noticeably redder in spring and its blooms a deeper pink. (See the third picture for a comparison between a 'Rosenrot' flower and the standard wild form.) If you are only going to grow one form of Butomus, this is the one we would recommend.

It makes a pleasing contrast if grown alongside the White Form of this plant. The two forms take their names from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot ("Snow White and Rose Red"), which tells the story of two sisters with contrasting colouring.

Butomus plants like plenty of room for their roots to spread as they grow, so we would suggest starting your plant off in a pot of at least 2 litres capacity.

If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 2 Butomus umbellatus 'Rosenrot' plants per square foot of ground, or 1 plant per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
