Butomus umbellatus ‘Schneeweisschen’ is a selected form of the British native flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus), chosen for its lighter colouring. Like the wild type, it has very slender leaves and produces tall umbels of flowers in summer, but its stems are greener and its blooms are almost white instead of the standard pink.
It makes a pleasing contrast if grown alongside the Rose-Red Form of this plant. The two forms take their names from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot ("Snow White and Rose Red"), which tells the story of two sisters with contrasting colouring. (For this reason you can also sometimes find this plant listed under the German spelling "Schneeweißchen", or mistakenly written as "Schneeweibchen" or "Schneeweibschen").
Butomus plants like plenty of room for their roots to spread as they grow, so we would suggest starting your plant off in a pot of at least 2 litres capacity.
If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 2 Butomus umbellatus 'Schneeweisschen' plants per square foot of ground, or 1 plant per linear foot of pond edge.Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
