An unusual British native plant with glossy dark green strap-like leaves, and pink fluffy flowers which stand out of the water. It is a slow-growing and adaptable plant, which will grow in many positions - in full sun, in part-shade, or in moderate shade, around the edges of the pond with its foliage right out of the water, in shallow water, or in deeper water with its leaves floating on the surface. However, its preferred position is in deeper water (45cm/18 inches of water over the crown) in a sunny location - this is the only time it will produce its flowers. Found in the wild across Britain in ponds, lakes and canals, it is a useful plant for surface cover in a native set up and particularly in a native barrel pond, as it can grow in deeper water than many native plants. Previously known as Polygonum amphibium.
We grow these plants in shallow water (around 6 inches over the crown) here at the nursery, so if placing in very deep water, we recommend that you drop the plant down in stages, around one foot of depth at a time, allowing it to grow up to the surface in between each stage. This can be achieved by standing the pot on house bricks or on flower pots filled with gravel.
