This is a double-flowered arrowhead, with slender, bright-green, arrow-shaped leaves and pure white, fluffy pom-pom flowers. It is more striking than the native British arrowhead - in addition to its double blooms, it emerges earlier in spring, has leaves that are more defined and angular, and retains its foliage longer.
Like the native arrowhead, it grows each year from an underground tuber (the 'potato,' see picture). It appears above the soil as a green spike in April to May, grows rapidly, and flowers in mid to late summer. After flowering, the plant dies back, while underground it produces two or three tubers for the following year. Occasionally, these tubers may escape from the pot and appear elsewhere in the pond the next spring, though this is uncommon. The plant overwinters as these round tubers, with a growing spike but without leaves or roots, from autumn until the following spring.
Because it overwinters as a tuber, it is not usually available in pots early in the year. Early in the season, it can be purchased as loose tubers, or later in pots (generally from May onwards). If planting loose tubers, position them with the growing spike pointing upwards and cover with about an inch of soil
If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 3 Sagittaria sagittifolia var. leucopetala 'Flore Pleno' plants per square foot of ground, or 2 plants per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
