  • Approximate height: 20cm (8 inches)
  • Recommended water depth over pot: 0 - 10cm (0 - 4 inches)
  • Flowering time: May to August
  • Flower colour: Blue
  • Supplied loose and bare root: one portion contains at least ten stems. For best results we recommend potting on using a 1 litre pot

This fast-growing British native is useful as an edging plant, producing glossy, trailing green foliage year-round and tiny blue flowers continuously through the summer. The waxy leaves are evergreen and persist through winter, tolerating frost and ice, which makes it one of the few native pond plants to provide genuine winter interest. Veronica beccabunga is also on the RHS’ Plants for Pollinators list. The plant's vigour is always strongest in its newest growth, so if it needs tidying, the best approach is simply to remove and re-plant the outer stems, which are the most robust and quick to establish.

Because Water Speedwell naturally trails rather than standing upright, we supply it as a bare-root plant rather than in pots (where it tends to spill over very quickly). You will receive freshly cut loose stems. We recommend potting these into a container of around 1 litre capacity using standard aquatic soil, planting the stems about one to two inches deep. They root very readily and establish quickly.

If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 2 Veronica beccabunga plants per square foot of ground, or 1 plant per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
