A square of hessian fabric, approximately 45cm x 45cm (18 inches x 18 inches). For lining open-mesh aquatic baskets (crates) or enclosing root balls.
Modern open-mesh baskets have relatively fine mesh and do not generally require a hessian liner in order to hold the soil in. However, if you are using very fine powdery or sandy soil, have an old-fashioned basket with a very open mesh, or have a significant water flow, you may still need a liner.
As a guide, if carefully cut into appropriately-sized pieces, one hessian square will be just enough to line:
-
Two of our large round 4-litre baskets, or
- Three of our small round 2-litre baskets, or
- Four of our mini round 1-litre baskets
But if you do not want to bother cutting it up, use one hessian square per basket.
