  • Approximate height: Mature leaves float on the water surface with flowers held slightly above
  • Recommended water depth over crown of plant: 15 - 60cm (6 - 24 inches)
  • Flowering time: Late April/May to June
  • Flower colour: White
  • Supplied loose and bare root: one portion contains ten stems. For best results we recommend potting up using a 1 litre pot.

Undoubtedly one of our prettiest native oxygenators, this attractive plant produces two types of leaves: submerged foliage with very finely cut, feathery leaves, and then floating three-lobed leaves that appear in late spring to early summer as the plant flowers. When in flower, the pond looks as if it has been lightly dusted with snow, creating a striking effect. The flowering season is surprisingly long, lasting around six weeks. Its only drawback is that the foliage dies back and disappears after flowering, but it re-emerges in its fine feathery form in mid to late autumn as temperatures cool.

Many plants sold under this name are actually flowing-water Ranunculus species, which have fine, hair-like submerged foliage year-round. This is the true still-water species, distinguished by floating leaves when in flower.

You will receive loose, freshly cut stems of this plant. We recommend potting them in a container of around 1 litre capacity, using standard aquatic soil, and planting the stems about 1 inch deep so they can root easily. We do not supply the stems wrapped in lead weights, as the pressure can crush the delicate stems, and most people prefer not to have lead permanently in their pond. Initially, we recommend no more than 6 - 8 inches of water above the soil; once the plant is established, it can be placed deeper if desired. House bricks or pots filled with gravel can be used to raise the plant to the correct level.

If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 1 Ranunculus aquatilis bunch per square foot of water surface or per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
