Undoubtedly one of our prettiest native oxygenators, this attractive plant produces two types of leaves - submerged foliage with very finely cut feathery leaves, and then in late spring/early summer floating three-lobed leaves are produced as the plant flowers. (If grown in very shallow water it can even produce a third kind of foliage - delicate upright stems above the water surface). When in flower and viewed from a distance the water looks like it's been dusted with snow. Very pretty. And the flowering season is surprisingly long - around six weeks of blooms.
Its only drawback is that the foliage dies back and disappears for the summer after it has flowered. It will then re-grow in the fine feathery form in autumn as temperatures cool.
The Ranunculus aquatilis plants we sell are not loose bunches of stems as with most nurseries, but are rooted potted plants. We also see quite a lot of plants advertised under this name which are actually the flowing water Ranunculus species - they have fine, hair-like, underwater foliage at all times of the year. This is the true still-water species, which has floating leaves when flowering.
Stock is limited as demand for this plant is exceptionally high.
If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 1 Ranunculus aquatilis plant per square foot of water surface or per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
