Native species. This beautiful and striking British plant has very slender leaves which are green with a reddish base. It produces umbels of rose-pink flowers on very tall stems in summer. It needs to reach a reasonable size before flowering, so is likely to bloom in its second year rather than its first. Very easy to grow.
Butomus plants like plenty of room for their roots to spread as they grow, so we would suggest starting your plant off in a pot of at least 2 litres capacity, and larger is better. If you opt for a 2-litre pot, pot the plant on again after a year. If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 2 Butomus umbellatus plants per square foot of ground, or 1 plant per linear foot of pond edge.
